Steve Pistorius - Baby, I'd Love to Steal You (Composed by Tony Jackson)

Steve Pistorius - Low Gravy (Composed by Jelly Roll Morton)

A dazzling performance of musicality and propulsive energy celebrating the colorful lives of two New Orleans jazz luminaries.

Join Steve Pistorius and the Southern Syncopators as they take listeners through a program of tunes highlighting the work and life of jazz legends Tony Jackson and Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, two of the most important entertainers to come out of the Storyville neighborhood in New Orleans and key figures in the evolution of jazz music. Jackson - brilliant musician (piano and vocals), composer, and “man of a thousand songs," achieved considerable acclaim and respect for his contributions to jazz. Morton - verbose, exuberant and self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, he was the first and most influential composer of jazz, a pivotal figure in its development, and created a uniquely New Orleans style of piano playing and band arranging.

Steve Pistorius, the only living piano player from New Orleans specializing in early jazz, leads the band as they unite song and storytelling for a jubilant experience of select tunes.

Take a trip back to the dawn of the 20th century and hear the birth and development of early jazz.

From the steamy brothels of New Orleans’ Storyville District to the after hour cabarets of Harlem’s 52nd Street, pianist John Royen pays tribute to the early pioneers of this wonderful music.

Beginning with the classic ragtime of Scott Joplin, through the syncopated struts and stomps of Jelly Roll Morton, to the swinging stride piano of Fats Waller and beyond, John creates a musical storyline that takes his audience through the growth and social development of this special art form. Each presentation is unique and John keeps his audience captivated with amusing anecdotes, commentary and professional insights on the life and times of these great musicians.
